How to Best Prepare for Life's Unexpected Interruptions

Life is full of interruptions and we’re not always prepared. In this episode, Lyn Elliott, Assistant Vice President, State Government Relations at American Property Casualty Insurance Association, will share her knowledge about being equipped when the inevitable interruptions disrupt our lives.

How Crisis Can Change How We Respond in the Future

  • A pivotal time in Lyn’s life was when she experienced a wildfire. People didn’t have time to grab many of their belongings and it helped her define what was truly important.
  • During this wildfire, Lyn also learned the importance of being prepared from a friend who also had decisions to make about her belongings. Her friend owned original paintings but when it was time to evacuate, she didn’t worry about them being lost because they were already insured. She had made preparations in case of unforeseen circumstances.
  • When you’re prepared, you don’t get upset when a sudden interruption comes and disrupts your life.
  • Taking personal responsibility is important. We are all in charge of our own behavior and when disaster strikes, we only have ourselves to depend on.
  • Your home is your biggest asset and you want to make sure to keep that protected. Insurance is a critical back-up plan.
  • Lyn’s first tip is to annually conduct an insurance check-up. It is important to put it on your calendar as a recurring appointment every year a month before your policy reviews.
  • In case of disasters, it’s always wise to walk through your home and video the aftermath. It’s also important to keep track of the receipts for repairs that will be done.
  • As a leader, you need to impress on your team, your family, and others that when there are unexpected life interruptions, your life is the most important thing.
  • While it’s important to encourage others in being well-prepared, it’s also important to be sensitive about it. You want everyone to be on board but expect that not everyone will take your advice.
